Discover Böhming, Kipfenberg and the Altmühl Valley

This proverb was often used in the region in the past. It should highlight both the scenic beauty and the prosperity of the 622 inhabitants of Böhming.

Since the Stone Age, almost all cultural and historical epochs have left their mark on Böhming. Böhming was first demonstrably mentioned in a document in 1186. The Church of St. John the Baptist, dating from the 12th century (rebuilt in the 15th century), is located outside the village in the middle of the site of a former Roman fort. The question “Why didn’t they keep the church in the village?” has occupied generations of Bohemians. Unsuccessful.

The old schoolhouse (1922/24) in the town centre was converted into a youth and community centre a few years ago. Since then, it has become a popular meeting place. Clubs in Böhming include the volunteer fire brigade and the fruit and gardening club.

Back to the time of the Romans

Travel back in time to the Roman era.

Nearly 2,000 years ago, the Limes, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, ran through the area of the market town of Kinding.

The Limes was initially built as a palisade along the Roman imperial border, later as a wall. Constructed largely in the 2nd century, it existed until around 260 AD, the end of Roman rule in Raetia north of the Danube. The Limes fortifications included forts, bathhouses, and towers.

Only about a 20-minute walk from the Römercastell Wirtshaus & Hotel in Böhming is one of the tower sites of the Limes, the former border of the Roman Empire, which once stretched for about 550 kilometers.
